Last Sunday Talks

Nathan and I had talks last Sunday so I thought we would share.  But, Nathan does not write his talks word for word like I do so here are the links to the talks he pulled his ideas from.
The Purifying Power of Gethsemane by Bruce R. McConkie
The Atonement of Jesus Christ by Jeffrey R. Holland
Here is mine.
Good morning. For those of you who don’t know me I am Korina Moon. Nathan and I moved into the ward in September 2013. We have a little one and her name is Princess. Sometimes she can be a pain but great at guarding the house from squirrels. Today I was asked to speak on Christ which is very coincidental. I was talking to my husband after conference that I wanted to get to know Christ better and that I would start reading the New Testament.
I once heard a story of a man who asked someone “Who is Christ,” and the person answered He was born of a virgin mother in a manger. The man went to someone else with the same question and they answered, He was crucified and rose the third day. The man went to another and asked “Who is Christ?” The person fell to his knees and cried out “Messiah”
I come to understand that there is a difference between knowing of Christ and knowing Christ. So how do I go from knowing of Christ to knowing Christ? Of course we should do the basics that are asked of us. Read our scriptures daily, pray daily and attend your meetings. But in my early years I felt I have done all these things and still didn't know Christ.  Then there came a point in my life when I was in despair. I didn't know how I was going to get past it and how I could make this wrong right?
I came across a book at a great time. It is called Believing Christ by Stephen E. Robinson. In this book a former bishop tells of a man who came to him feeling the same way and his response.
Man: “Look bishop, I am just not celestial material.”
Bishop: “So what’s your point? Of course you’re not celestial material. Neither am I, Neither is any of us. That’s why we need the atonement of Christ, which can make us celestial. Why don't you admit your real problem-that you don't have faith in Christ?”
Man: “How dare you say that to me? I know that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.”
Bishop: “Yes, you believe in Christ, you just don’t believe Christ. He says he can make you celestial material, and you have the audacity to sit there and say, ‘No, he can’t.’ You believe all right-you believe Christ makes promises he can’t keep.
He goes on to say, “There are those who want the Church in their lives but are afraid of a full embrace. The bottom line for all such is the same-even though they may believe in him, they do not trust him. They do not yet have genuine faith in Christ.”
When I was younger I thought that I needed to know everything about Christ, so I did my best to learn the scripture stories and the details of his life. Of course knowing who Christ was and what he did is important but it was not until I implemented the atonement in my life that I came to understand the meaning of these stories at a deeper level.
Bishop Robinson also tells us of his wife who had been weighed down by all the demands of this world. “She became very passive in her attitude toward the Church. When her Relief Society counselors called her, she told them that they could do whatever they wanted, that she has asked to be released from her calling.” She said, “I can’t  do it anymore. I can’t lift it. My load is just too heavy. I can’t do all the things I’m supposed to. I’m just not perfect-I’m never going to be perfect, and I just can’t pretend anymore that I am. I’ve finally admitted to myself I can’t make it to the celestial kingdom, so why should I break my back trying?”
As Christians we might also feel as she did. In order to have a calling in the church we should be the best at it. When that is simply not the case. We come to church and serve because we are sinners and imperfect. We just need to come and do our best for that is all that is asked of us.
Bishop responds to his wife’s concern, “Who would have thought that after all the meeting and lessons, after all the talks and testimonies and family home evening, somehow the heart of the gospel had escaped her? She knew and believed everything except the most important part. You see, Janet was trying to save herself. She was trying to do all with Jesus Christ as merely an adviser. Janet knew why Jesus can be called a coach, a cheerleader, an advisor, a teacher, the elder brother, the head of the Church, and even God. She understood all of that, but she didn't understand why he is called the Savior.
Every year my family and I would celebrate Easter and the resurrection of Christ but it wasn't till I got older that I  really understood my Savior's sacrifice. At times I find that I am guilty of trying to save myself but I have to continually be reminded that I can not do this on my own. I need to rely on my Savior and trust in him. I believe the parable of the bicycle by Brother Robinson explains how it works.
“One afternoon after work as I sat reading the newspaper, our oldest daughter, Sarah, who was then seven years old, came up to me and said, ‘Daddy, can I get a bike? I’m the only kid in our neighborhood who doesn't have a bike...How, and when?’ she asked. Now it would not have been easy for us financially to buy a bicycle at that particular time, so I tried to stall her “I’ll tell you what, You save all your pennies, and pretty soon you’ll have enough for a bike.” A little bit of time past and  I was aware of Sarah doing some chores for her mother and being paid for it. Then one day she went into her bedroom, and I heard a sound like “clink, clink,” “Sarah what are you doing?” She came out of her bedroom with a little jar in her hand. She said, ‘you promised that if I saved all my pennies, pretty soon I’d have enough to get a bike. And Daddy, I've saved every single one!’ ‘OK, Sarah, lets go downtown and look at bikes.’  We walked in and she said ‘Dad this is it. This is just the one I want.’ She was trilled. Then she noticed the price tag hanging down between the handlebars, and with a smile, she reached down and turned it over. At first she just stared at it, the the smile disappeared. Her face clouded up, and she started to cry ‘Oh, daddy, I’ll never have enough for the bicycle.’ It was her first bitter dose of adult reality. ‘Sarah, how much do you have?’ ‘Sixty-one cents,’ she answered. ‘Then I’ll tell you what. Let’s try a different arrangement. You give me everything you've got, and this bike is yours.”
“We all want something desperately, but it’s not a bicycle. We want the kingdom of God. We want to go home to our heavenly parents worthy and clean. But the horrible price-perfect performance-is hopelessly beyond our means. At this point, the Savior steps in and says, ‘so you've done all you can do, but it’s not enough. Well, don't’ despair. I’ll tell you what, let’s try a different arrangement. How much do you have? How much can fairly be expected of you? You give me exactly that much and do all you can do, and I will provide the rest for now.”

I would like to bare my testimony that I know Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ live and have provided a way for us to return to Them. I am so grateful for my parent converting to the church that I may be raised in the gospel. I am so grateful for my Savior and His sacrifice. Brother Holland, said, “Just believing, just having a molecule of faith, when focused on the Lord Jesus Christ, has ever been and always will be the first principle of His eternal gospel, the first step out of despair.” I know this to be true. I say this things in the name of Jesus Christ Amen.

Everything!

A little update and a photo.

We finally went to get our library cards! Their book selection is slightly dated but there is something special about going to the Library. It like going shopping and not spending money. Awesomeness!

This is how I feel about field trips. I'm super stressed but I want everyone to have a great time, be well behaved, and not lose anyone.

Even thought all of these stressful thoughts are running through my head, I couldn't help but think this was worth it. Very educational and the scenery was beautiful.

We were invited to join a volleyball team. We're called the Luna-tics. Get it?! Last name Moon, translate it to Spanish and you get the rest. We are new to playing together so we have a lot to work on, but we do make a good looking team, don't we?! ;)

We finally finished painting the room. Now it is just a matter of finding accessories to fill it up.
Here is what we have so far.

Conference/Easter Sunday we made cinnamon rolls and they were amazing!

Also, dad tested out our new grill and the results we were magnificent!

Nate came home after playing basketball and surprised me with a Charge HR and I love it.

The past two weeks on my runs I've had the pleasure of seeing these two. It makes me feel like I am out in the country but not. Also, an update on my healthier lifestyle: I have lost 8 lbs and total 13 lbs since September. It has been a difficult road to get my mind right, but this last month with weather getting better helped a ton! One day I will be where I want to be, but at least I'm doing this in a healthy way and I still have hope.

Winter is officially over for now and Nate has started playing softball again. It is always fun to see him and my family play.

There you have it; short, sweet and to the point.

Week "N" Wedding

This week, Nate and I started running again! It took a few months longer than expected but, hey, we are making it happen now! We plan on signing up for a 5K. More details on that will be coming soon but our running plan says we should be ready in May.

Six months into our house and we have only painted our powder room. Now we have our guest room added to the list! Yay! The color is called Romance from Sherwin Williams. More pics will be added when the bedroom is complete.

We've had so much rain lately that the dried up creek in our backyard is not so dry anymore. We stepped out on our deck and enjoyed the little stream.

This weekend we went to Brownville, TX for Mando and Yvonne's Wedding.
We are so happy for them and their new life together!

Here are a few of the highlights.

Oh and did I forget to mention, Brian, Laurel, and baby Everly came with us?!
Well they did!

And baby Everly loved the music!

My brother Armando and I.

Mom and Dad.

Since Bryan and Laurel came with us of course we had to get our traditional foods.
First, corn in a cup.

Last, tacos!

It was a fun filled week with friends and family!
Life is good!

Spring Break

There are so many reasons why I love my job, and being able to have time off with my siblings is a huge plus! We tried a pizza recipe with the kids at work, so i decided to try this idea with my family. They look funny but are really tasty.

Monday, I cleaned. Tuesday, spent the day with by brother and sister and got a pedicure! Wednesday, we went to the zoo but forgot to take pictures.
Thursday, we went to the Dallas World Aquarium. This was the one thing I wanted to do all week and here are a few of the highlights.

Nathan was suppose to be off with me but was in the middle of a project at work and could not get out. Since Nathan couldn't make it to the Aquarium we were determined to make the weekend count.

Friday we went to Texas Road House, it had been awhile so the steak tasted extra delicious.
After dinner we went to the House of Blues to see "Celghorn." Our friend Dylan is in the band so of course we went to support.

Saturday, our friends Micheal and Linda invited us to a Hulk Marathon at their place. We had munchies and so much fun hanging out with them. We really dig movie nights in "The Tardis" aka/their media room. We are also super excited about Avengers 2 coming out and already bought tickets! Oh yeah!

Saturday and Sunday we painted our guest room. Here is a little sneak peak, we will post the finished product soon.

February

February was kind of a rough month for us. We did not want to do anything! But here are a few things we did do.
Story, growing up I had my own room with a queen size bed set. Spoiled I know. Any how, my mother was going to give way the set when I suggested taking it. She gladly gave it to me and I decided to give it a face lift.
We did the bed and here are the results.

I love my bed!

For Valentine's I wanted to make a special treat for my kids at work but a few are on a gluten free diet so I decided to make gluten free macaroons. My handsome husband helped, the end result looked really cute but taste....not so good.

Another story/confession, at the beginning of the year I found myself Utah sick. I missed our friends, the mountains, the weather and of course the snow. So I prayed to Heavenly Father if I could PLEASE have a real snow day. I knew it sounded silly and there are more important prayers that He could answer but it was something I really wanted. Needless to say I received my wonderful gift of snow.

On a Friday I went to pick up my sister and she spent the night!

I know we have a 16 year difference in age but she is so funny and I love having her as my sister!

January

On Sunday, January 18, my grandmother Longoria past away.
We went to Brownsville, TX for her viewing and to say goodbye, until we meet again.

She was a good women who raised 9 kids with a loving husband by her side.

It was a beautiful viewing and many came to commemorate her life. Unfortunately we could not stay long so that same day we headed back home with my brother and sister.

The day was so beautiful, I like to think that it was grandma telling us that she is happy and in a better place.

To be honest I was not able to communicate with her very well because my Spanish is not so good. I kept procrastinating when I would finally be better and tell her my thoughts and ideas. I wanted her to know that she raised a incredible man whom I call dad. I am so grateful for him and his example in my life.

Lately in church there has been a lot of talk about visiting the temple. My parents, Nathan and I have gone once a week these past two weeks. Thanks to my Aunt Rachel we were able to take family names on my mothers side. I don't understand everything but I do know that families are forever and
life continues after death.

Make it Count!

This is the last week before I go back to work, so Nathan and I tried to make it count! Monday we went to the Prairie Lights in Grand Prairie, TX. We have visited Prairie Lights in the past but this year was by far the best we've seen. The lights were so well organized and well thought out.

Here are some of our favorites.

Raising the flag on Iwo Jima.

The Alamo.

The nativity.

The tunnel as you are leaving.

Tuesday, December 30th was my brother Alex's Birthday! We celebrated by going to Ton's Mongolian Grill. We then went to the movies to see "The Hobbit." I know the movie did not get great reviews but we absolutely loved it!

Me and the 18 year old Birthday Boy!

For New Years Eve, we went to our brother-in-law's parent's house and had a blast! There is always good food, dancing, and just parting all night long! We admit we were getting tired towards the end but we made it!

After the traditional kiss at the stroke of midnight we took a New Years selfie. Don't mind the lights slashing our faces;)

New Years day we went to see Trains at North Park Mall. They had a creative display of trains traveling through popular cities around the country. All the proceeds for the exhibit went to the Ronald McDonald House in Dallas.
Here are a few of the highlights.

By the way, my siblings loved it!

I thought this was pretty random and funny. Aliens taking over!

A part of Dallas.

The hot air balloons were moving up and down.

The State Fair of Texas w/Big Tex.

We ended the day by having dinner at Pho 95 in Arlington. It is one of our go-to places because we love Asian food! The spring rolls w/Peanut sauce is amazing and nothing beats pho on a cold, rainy day.
